A sizeable crowd of protestors have gathered at Kwame Nkrumah Circle’s Obra Spot under the name of #OccupyBoGdemo, a movement started by the Parliamentary Minority caucus.
The protesters are united in their demand for the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, and his two deputies. They are primarily dressed in sombre black and striking red clothes, with many wearing red caps.
Their requests are in response to grave information regarding the Central Bank’s financial situation.
The Bank of Ghana had a staggering loss of GH60.81 billion during the 2022 fiscal year, as revealed by the protestors. Due to this enormous financial setback, there are serious questions regarding the bank’s management and accountability.
Additionally, the use of more than $250 million for the construction of a new headquarters has drawn criticism.
The demonstrators are critical of the distribution of such large sums of money, particularly in light of the country’s massive financial losses and current economic difficulties.
The #OccupyBoGdemo campaign emphasises how crucial it is for Ghana’s Central Bank to operate transparently, with accountability, and with solid financial management.
It also demonstrates how citizens’ unhappiness with the nation’s leading institutions’ financial soundness and management is growing.
It is unclear how the Bank of Ghana and the government will react to these calls for reform and accountability as the protests pick up steam.
