Diamond Appiah, a businesswoman and socialite from Ghana, was released by the Circuit Court of Accra in a case concerning an alleged fraudulent land deal, but she soon found herself back in police detention.
The charge against Appiah was dismissed by the Office of the Attorney in a procedure approved by Chief State Attorney Mrs. Evelyn Keelson. She was, however, detained by the police as soon as she stepped outside the courtroom.
Diamond Appiah was detained and charged on January 17, 2023, according to a report by StarrFM’s court reporter, Murtala Innusah, for allegedly engaging in a fraudulent land transaction for $30,000.
She was charged with selling Ayisha Modi a plot of land in East Legon Hills for the aforementioned money. Appiah was given GHc300,000 bail after entering a not guilty plea to the allegations.
The former actress and musician’s defence attorney argued that the prosecution had no evidence to support their client’s charges and emphasised that the law should be used to uphold justice, not the opposite.
Following consideration of the arguments, the Chief State Attorney’s process was acknowledged by the sitting judge, His Honour Mr. Isaac Addo. When such a process is filed, the accused person has the right to be released, he said.
Diamond Appiah was surprisingly detained once more after being released, despite this. Ayisha Modi, the complainant in the case, was also present during the proceedings.
History of the Case
According to DSP Evans Kesse, both the accused, Diamond Appiah, and the complainant, Ayisha Modi, are businesswomen who live in East Legon and Adjiringanor, respectively, in Accra.
The complainant wanted a piece of land in 2020 for construction, and Johnson, a witness in the case, was talking about this. The defendant overheard the exchange and intervened, saying she had a land parcel in East Legon Hills and could offer it to the complainant for a discount.
Under the pretence of selling the complainant a plot of land in East Legon Hills, the accused allegedly obtained $30,000 in cash from her. The complainant visited the property and came across Gustav, who claimed ownership of it. When the complainant’s attempts to get her money back proved futile, she reported it to the police, which resulted in the accuser’s detention.
According to the investigation, the accused did not possess the land at the mentioned site. The accused allegedly admitted to the crime in her caution statement. She was charged and hauled before the court following the investigation.
Uncertainty surrounds the events that led to Diamond Appiah’s rapid rearrest after her release.
