Manchester City added the Uefa Super Cup to their treble-winning season by defeating Sevilla on penalties in Athens.
Pep Guardiola’s Champions League winners were defeated in a shootout by Arsenal, but their fortunes were turned when Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj hit the crossbar after nine straight penalties.
After a spectacular header from Youssef En-Nesyri put the Europa League holders ahead on 25 minutes, City had to come from behind to force penalties.
Both Sevilla goalkeeper Bono and Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson made outstanding saves before being named man-of-the-match. Cole Palmer equalised in the 63rd minute with a looping header from Rodri’s cross.
It set up the tense finish, which resulted in Guardiola adding another piece of cutlery to his huge collection.
