Women’s Wing of the Socialist Movement of Ghana Extends Congratulations to Opoku-Agyemang as the First Female Vice President

The Women’s Wing of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (WW-SMG) has warmly congratulated Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on her election as Ghana’s first female Vice President.

The group highlighted that her groundbreaking achievement marks a significant step forward for women in Ghana, serving as a source of pride and inspiration for those who champion equality, justice, and the power of inclusive leadership.

Although the Electoral Commission has not yet officially announced the presidential results, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has acknowledged defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, whose running mate is Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.

A statement from WW-SMG conveyed that the triumph comes at a pivotal time when women in Ghana, particularly those from working-class and disadvantaged communities, have endured significant struggles as a result of the neoliberal policies of the ruling government.

It unfairly taxed women’s sanitary products, treating them as luxury items, and introduced policies that adversely affected the health, social, and physical well-being of Ghanaian women.

Your election represents a shining hope for a new approach to governance, one that we believe will emphasize fairness, dignity, and true representation for all women.

“As you prepare to take on this esteemed role, we hope you will represent the voices of all Ghanaians. We specifically encourage you to push for policies that address the unique challenges faced by working-class women, eliminate unjust practices, and create opportunities for those who have been historically marginalized. Your appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a turning point for the advancement of women in Ghana.

We fully support you, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as you strive to bring about the change that Ghanaians have long called for. May your leadership be marked by meaningful service, a steadfast commitment to justice, and a lasting legacy that opens doors for younger women and girls in leadership. Congratulations again on this well-deserved success. We eagerly anticipate the positive impact your leadership will have on our nation.”
