Yaw Sarpong, the veteran Ghanaian gospel musician, passes on at Emena a Hospital located in Kumasi on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
The news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, bringing an end to years of public concern over the musician’s health.
Yaw Sarpong had battled ill health for some time and had occasionally withdrawn from performances to focus on recovery.
Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of contemporary Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of the renowned Asomafo Gospel Band. Together with the group, he produced numerous timeless gospel classics that shaped the sound and direction of Akan gospel music.
Recognized as a pioneer of current Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong attained national popularity as the leader of the esteemed Asomafo Gospel Band.
His demise occurs just a month following the death of Maame Tiwa, a pivotal member of the Asomafo ensemble, a loss that had profoundly impacted the gospel music community.
