The U.S. Embassy in Ghana announced that, in 2024, it granted visas to 25,000 Ghanaians from a total of 61,000 applications submitted.
During a Consular Media Day held on May 9, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana highlighted efforts to promote understanding of U.S. visa procedures and encourage lawful travel. Speaking at the event, Consular General Elliot Fertik emphasized the need for compliance with U.S. immigration laws, warning against fraudulent visa practices and illegal entry.
Fertik noted that in 2024, the embassy issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians for purposes such as work, study, and tourism, out of 61,000 applications received. He underscored that while the U.S. continues to welcome Ghanaian travelers, those who violate immigration rules risk having their visas denied, revoked, or being permanently barred from entry.
Fertik further emphasized the U.S. government’s firm stance on immigration, stating, “The US has zero tolerance for illegal immigrants. Those who break the rules will face the law, including visa refusal or an outright ban from entering the US.”
The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing transparency and accessibility in the visa application process.
“We want to make sure that Ghanaians understand the proper way of applying for visas and what is expected of them during the process,” Fertik stated.
He added, “Visitors to the US must ensure they obey the laws and regulations. I’m sure you’ve noticed some of the improvements we’ve implemented to enhance the customer experience.”
He concluded by emphasizing the dual mission of the U.S. government: promoting lawful travel while ensuring national security.
“We also have the mandate of protecting our borders by preventing illegal immigration and strictly enforcing U.S. immigration laws,” Fertik stated.
