To whom much is given much is expected – Alban Bagbin tells NDC MPs, incoming Mahama govt.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama on winning the general elections in 2024.

Additionally, he congratulated the members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their resounding electoral victory, which ensures that they will form the majority party in the upcoming parliament.

In a statement given in Parliament on Monday, December 16, he stated that the tremendous support of Ghanaians for Mr. Mahama and the NDC MPs puts a great deal of pressure on them to succeed.

“You cannot afford to let someone down; to whom much is given, much is respected,” he stated.

For his part, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin questioned how the incoming Mahama administration, which had pledged to eliminate taxes, would generate enough money to finance its programs.

He claims that Ghanaians are curious to see how the Mahama administration will safeguard the public coffers.

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for general elections in 2024, claimed that Ghanaians were burdened by a number of taxes and pledged to eliminate them within his first 100 days in government.

The e-levy, COVID charge, 10% betting levy, emissions levy, and import duty on machinery and automobiles brought in for use in industry and agriculture are among the levies.

The Effuri legislator stated, “We are going to see how you [pointing to NDC MPs] will protect the public purse, we have heard from Terkper that you can’t finance the free SHS,” while speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, December 16. We’ll see how you plan to generate money to support the Nkokor Nkitinkitin.

It's not economic performance reshuffle' – Joe Jackson |

Joe Jackson, the CEO of Dalex Finance, for example, expressed doubts about how the prospective Mahama administration would fund development if it eliminated all of the taxes it had pledged to do away with.

Jackson emphasized how difficult it is to manage the economy, especially in light of the manifesto’s promise to eliminate some taxes, such as the e-levy.

“Let us not be mistaken, in 2025, we have to look at how we are performing in terms of revenue because some of the items are going out,” Jackson stated in an interview with the Press on Friday, December 13. The removal of the COVID charge, betting tax, and e-levy was promised in the manifesto. Many problems will therefore surface, and I am confident that the task will be extremely difficult.
