Kofi Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation, justified the decision not to disclose the Black Stars’ budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, explaining that it could have distracted the team.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, March 25, Kofi Adams explained, “People were asking me to disclose the budget for the games, but I kept asking myself what the budget would do for the team ahead of the games. Sometimes, certain situations create distractions, so we should carefully weigh each situation before making a decision.”
However, his stance appears to contradict a previous directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who, upon swearing Adams into office, stressed the importance of transparency regarding the Black Stars’ budget and financial matters.
These comments come following the Black Stars’ back-to-back victories in their 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.
Ghana triumphed 5-0 over Chad in Accra on Friday, March 21, before securing another impressive 3-0 victory against Madagascar in Morocco on Monday, March 24.
The two victories have placed the senior national team in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The issue of financial accountability in Ghanaian football has been a long-standing topic of debate, with fans and the general public calling for greater transparency on how funds are allocated for national team activities.
Adams’ comments have sparked renewed debate on whether revealing financial details could influence team performance or if transparency should be prioritized.
As the discussion unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Ministry of Sports will address financial disclosures moving forward, especially considering the President’s position on the matter.
