Olga Carmona’s low, forceful goal gave Spain their first Women’s World Cup victory as they defeated England 1-0 in the championship match at Stadium Australia.

Spain has never achieved a knockout round victory in a significant event until this one. Since Sarina Wiegman’s tenure in 2021, England has only lost twice.

Both teams had opportunities early in the first half. After Rachel Daly cut a pass back towards the edge of the box for Lauren Hemp, whose left-footed curling shot struck the crossbar, England came close to scoring.

Spain responded soon immediately. Salma Paralluelo missed a chance at goal after Mariona Caldentey surged down the left flank and sent in a ball for her. Alba Redondo’s shot was diverted into her path by her attempt, but Mary Earps parried it away after she mishandled it with her right foot.
