Empress Gifty , Ghanaian gospel musician says she’s unfazed by the feedback that her latest track, Watch Me, sounds similar to Kuami Eugene’s style. Despite some listeners noting that her vocal tone and delivery closely resemble that of the popular musician, Empress doesn’t see it as an issue.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Ignition, Empress Gifty clarified that the resemblance to Kuami Eugene was intentional. She explained that the song was recorded in Eugene’s studio, where he had already laid the groundwork for the track. According to her, Kuami Eugene had already composed much of the music, including the arrangement and vocal templates, which influenced the overall sound.
Rather than sticking to her usual sound, Empress chose to step outside her comfort zone and experiment with something different. She consciously decided not to sing in her typical style, opting instead to follow Eugene’s musical direction and adopt his vocal style for the record. “I didn’t want to sound like Empress Gifty. I wanted to do something fresh and unique,” she said, adding that she took on the backing vocals and other parts of the song, fully immersing herself in the creative process with Eugene’s influence guiding her.
Empress Gifty further explained that Kuami Eugene took charge of the entire recording process, and she was more than willing to listen to his guidance. She emphasized that she humbled herself because she recognizes that Eugene possesses a unique talent, and to truly benefit from someone’s expertise, one must be open and humble. “He carries something, and if you want to tap into somebody’s blessing, you need to humble yourself,” she shared.
When asked whether this approach in any way diminishes her own artistry, Empress firmly responded, “Nothing! I am here. That is Watch Me. I am here talking about Watch Me, so it doesn’t take anything away from me.” She stressed that what matters most is that Kuami Eugene wrote the song and she was able to deliver it with her own style.
Watch Me, a gospel track infused with highlife elements, speaks to the transformative power of God in overcoming life’s challenges. The song was written, arranged, and produced by Kuami Eugene, marking a collaboration where his influence is clearly felt, but Empress Gifty’s own voice and presence still shine throu
