Sam George Promises Lower DSTV Subscription Prices for Ghanaians

Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has assured Ghanaians that steps will be taken to reduce DStv subscription prices, responding to widespread public concerns over the high cost of the service.

Samuel Nartey George, has pledged to secure a reduction in DStv subscription prices in response to growing public dissatisfaction over the high cost of pay-TV services in Ghana. The assurance follows persistent complaints from consumers who have described the current pricing of DStv packages as exorbitant and out of touch with the country’s prevailing economic conditions.

Addressing the media at a sectoral briefing on Thursday, July 3, the Minister acknowledged the frustration expressed by many Ghanaians over what they see as unfair pricing. He emphasized that the government, through his ministry, is committed to ensuring that digital service providers operate with fairness, transparency, and accountability.

Sam George revealed that his ministry has already begun engagements with DStv representatives in Ghana to discuss issues of affordability, value for money, fairness, and the overall quality of service delivery. According to him, these preliminary discussions have laid the groundwork for a more detailed and solution-focused meeting scheduled for Friday, July 4. This upcoming meeting will include representatives from DStv Ghana as well as executives from their parent company in South Africa.

“The meeting is intended to directly address public concerns about affordability, fairness, and the quality of service. I have clearly communicated the Ministry’s expectations — the pricing structure must take into account the economic context of Ghana. We cannot allow foreign service providers to operate without being sensitive to the financial pressures faced by ordinary citizens,” the Minister stated.

He went on to assure Ghanaians that the outcome of the meeting would be made public in a transparent manner and reiterated the government’s responsibility to protect the interests of consumers. “This engagement reflects our broader commitment to regulatory oversight and our determination to ensure that digital services in Ghana are fair, accessible, and responsive to the needs of our people,” he said.

Ending on a firm note, Sam George gave his word that he would not leave the negotiation table without securing a commitment from DStv to lower its prices. “I make you this one solemn promise: I will not walk out of tomorrow’s meeting without securing a reduction in DStv pricing. That is my assurance to the Ghanaian people,” he declared.

The minister’s intervention comes at a critical time when many Ghanaians are demanding more affordable and consumer-friendly digital services, and his strong stance signals a proactive approach by the government to regulate and reform pricing within the digital broadcast space.
