Rihanna went home over the weekend to attend the Crop Over Festival in her hometown Barbados and, as usual, she came dressed to impress. The singer strutted in the parade on Monday in a towering bedazzled costume that featured brown and gold jewels snaking up from her ankles to her shoulders, with thin strips of material covering her essentials, accented by a matching crown.
The traditional carnival outfit also featured a pair of gigantic colorful wings sprouting from her back in a cascade of yellow, orange and pink.
Rihanna has attended the event also known as the Grand Kadooment parade in the past, including in 2017, when she joined the throngs in the street while wearing one of the traditionally elaborate, vibrant costumes featuring feathers and beads. That year, the designer who worked on part of the star’s costume that year, Destiney Bleu, described waking up to an email from an assistant to Rihanna’s stylist saying she wanted a pair of tights for her Crop Over outfit.
Bleu quickly designed a pair of bedazzled tights, one in nude, the other in black, adding another notch to the belt of her high-profile client list, which had already included Beyoncé, Shania Twain and Lady Gaga. “We pretty much accomplished bedazzling everyone, the only one left was Rihanna,” Bleu said at the time.
In 2015, Billboard reported that Rihanna’s annual attendance at the 300-year-old seasonal music festival had spurred international interest in the event, as well as helping to raise the profile of other artist’s from the singer’s home country. Rihanna also attended the event was in 2019, where she had an equally eyes popping, feather-bedecked costume.
