President of Health NGOs Criticizes Widespread ‘Indifference’ in Healthcare Facilities”

“President of NGOs in Health, Bright Amissah Nyarko, Raises Concerns Over Attitudes of Some Health Workers in Ghana”

Bright Amissah Nyarko, voiced his concerns about the prevalent ‘I don’t care attitude’ among some health workers in Ghana. During his speech at Media General’s Health Forum on May 7, 2025, which was centered around the theme “State and Future of Health Facilities: Reimagining Healthcare in Ghana,” he emphasized that this attitude has become far too common in healthcare facilities.

Furthermore, Nyarko urged relevant authorities to focus on expanding Community Health Planning Service (CHPS) compounds and district hospitals. He pointed out that these healthcare facilities are currently under significant strain, with the number of patients far exceeding their available capacity.

He stated, “A significant amount of attention and resources must be directed towards our CHPS Compounds and District hospitals. The number of people who depend on these facilities far exceeds the resources available.”

Meanwhile, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), expressed her concerns about the deteriorating condition of health facilities in the country.

While acknowledging that institutions like the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) are in better condition, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, a health professional, questioned why most health facilities have been left in poor states by successive governments. She emphasized that various administrations have made little effort to improve the condition of healthcare infrastructure nationwide.

Ofori-Ampofo pointed out that essential health infrastructures, equipment for professionals, and drainage systems in hospitals are in poor condition, making it difficult for health workers to perform effectively. She highlighted that health facilities, especially outside the capitals and in rural areas, are far from being in optimal condition. Even some facilities in the capitals, regional hospitals, and teaching hospitals are not in the best shape.

She also noted that health facilities across the country are not adequately funded by the government, relying instead on internally generated funds, which has slowed the progress of improving healthcare infrastructure throughout Ghana.

She emphasized, “Currently, all our health facilities depend on internally generated funds (IGFs), which is why, as you saw in the statistics, nearly 99% of OPD services require payment.”

She urged the government to focus on the health facilities in the country and allocate the necessary resources to improve them.
