The Ghana Police Hospital has revealed plans to carry out a mass burial for around 200 unclaimed bodies in an effort to reduce congestion in its mortuary.
The burial event is set to occur within the first quarter of 2025, and families of missing individuals are urged to visit the hospital’s pathology department by February 28, 2025, to identify and claim their loved ones. After this date, any unclaimed bodies will be buried together in a collective grave.
This initiative is a response to the hospital’s overcrowded storage facilities, with authorities stating that it will help free up space and enhance conditions for new admissions.
Other hospitals around the country are facing similar overcrowding issues. For example, the Police Hospital in Bogoso, located in the Western Region, is planning a burial for seven unclaimed bodies that have been stored for 20 months. Similarly, Tema General Hospital is organizing a mass burial to alleviate morgue congestion.
The Police Hospital is urging the public to help raise awareness and assist in identifying the unclaimed bodies in its morgue. This call for support is crucial to ensure that families are given the opportunity to properly identify and claim their deceased relatives, allowing them to give their loved ones a dignified and respectful farewell.
By encouraging community involvement, the hospital aims to facilitate the return of these bodies to their families before the scheduled mass burial, ensuring that no one is laid to rest without the proper acknowledgment and recognition from their loved ones.
