Professor Stephen Adei, former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), has linked the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 elections to significant voter apathy.
Professor Adei argues that President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s limited gain of just 200,000 more votes in the 2024 elections compared to 2020 indicates that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) didn’t win, but rather, the NPP lost due to internal disillusionment.
He emphasized that the NPP’s defeat stemmed from ignoring concerns about the economy, even from their own members, leading to widespread apathy. on December 22, he remarked, “The NDC didn’t win the election. In Ghana, the ruling government always loses. Mahama’s vote increase was minimal, suggesting that many people, including NPP members, simply chose not to vote.”
Professor Adei warned President-elect John Dramani Mahama against attempting to remove Jean Adukwei Mensa, the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), from office. He cautioned that such a move would be disastrous for Mahama.
Professor Adei also cautioned the incoming Mahama administration against any attempt to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornor, emphasizing that there is no justification for such an action.
Professor Adei warned that Ghanaians would face serious consequences if President-elect John Mahama decides to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornor.
He stated, “It will be disastrous; he will be reinforcing a harmful practice that will not benefit Ghana’s future, where every president essentially appoints a new EC. We must find a way to protect and preserve our institutions.”
