NHIA Disburses GH¢200m for Health Facility Claims as Free Dialysis Treatment Starts

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed GH¢200 million for the settlement of outstanding payments to health facilities nationwide.

The amount covers payments for claims submitted and verified for the months of September and October.

The Authority made this announcement in a statement issued on Sunday, December 1, 2024.

The NHIA’s prompt payments initiative, introduced earlier this year, has played a key role in maintaining a debt-free status for 2024, ensuring that healthcare providers across the country receive timely reimbursements.

“This latest payment brings the total amount released by the NHIA over the last two months to GH¢1 billion, highlighting the Authority’s continued commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS),” the Authority stated

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has also published a list of 20 accredited health facilities that will begin offering free dialysis treatment across Ghana, starting December 1, 2024.

“All participating facilities have received letters of commencement, ensuring the smooth implementation of this essential service,” the Scheme stated.

The NHIA states that the free dialysis initiative is expected to benefit around 1,200 patients nationwide, with an estimated annual cost of GH¢57 million.

“Each eligible patient will receive eight dialysis sessions per month at any private or public NHIA-accredited facility, at a cost of GH¢491 per session. As with the pilot phase, any facility that charges a patient for dialysis services will be required to refund the full amount,” the statement noted.

To support the initiative, the government, in collaboration with the World Bank, has secured 45 dialysis machines for use across the country. Seven of these machines have already been delivered, 23 are currently being cleared, and 15 more machines have been ordered. The NHIA also explained that each batch of 15 machines comes with 2,000 sets of consumables, amounting to 6,000 sets for all 45 machines.
