Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pounded Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo with requests for new rules regarding the submission of injunction requests to the Supreme Court.

The new regulation, according to the NDC national officer, which grants the Chief Justice exclusive authority to set deadlines for injunction applications, was deemed repugnant.

Sammy Gyamfi exclaimed, “The Chief Justice must be called out,” during a rally on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, September 9.

“It is just unacceptable for us to have a scenario in this nation where you file an injunction motion in the Supreme Court and are informed that you cannot be given a hearing date because the Chief Justice has travelled.

“According to new rules established by the Chief Justice, only she may now set the dates for the hearing on injunction requests. What civilised nation can this occur in? asked Sammy Gyamfi.

This comes after the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) failed to set a hearing date for the injunction application brought by five political parties, including the NDC, about the approaching limited voter registration process.

The parties are asking the Supreme Court to order the Election Commission to expand the forthcoming election to include electoral areas rather than district offices.

A declaration that the EC’s decision to conduct the 2023 limited/continuous voter registration at the district offices of the EC rather than conducting the same on the basis of electoral areas “will result in voter suppression particularly in rural constituencies of the country and is thus unconstitutional as it violates the racial equality clause” is one of the reliefs sought by the plaintiffs.

The Court did not specify a date for the hearing.
