Ghana has made a significant  democratic history by choosing Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to be the country’s first female vice president-elect.

Her historic victory under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) banner in the 2024 elections, where she ran alongside President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has been widely hailed as a pioneering accomplishment for woman representation in Ghanaian politics.

A Pioneer in Leadership and Education

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was born in Cape Coast, Central Region, on November 22, 1951, and has a history of breaking down obstacles. She is a renowned scholar who graduated from the University of Cape Coast with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma in Education. From Education to Governance

Significant advancements in education were made while she was in office, including the elimination of improvised “schools under trees,” the building of contemporary facilities, and the distribution of free textbooks and school uniforms.

She once again made history in 2020 when she was nominated for vice president by the NDC, being the first woman in Ghana to get such a nomination from a major political party. Her choice represented a fearless dedication to gender equality and inclusivity.

The Significance Of Her Election

Her victory serves as a positive example for women’s representation in African political leadership outside of Ghana, encouraging women to seek influential positions throughout the continent.

A Nation That Celebrates
In celebration of this historic triumph, NDC supporters crowded streets around the country as the election results were announced. Ghanaian women were proud of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s accomplishment, which they viewed as a strong testament to the leadership potential of women.
