Atletico Madrid’s Memphis Depay has clarified that the Asantehene Osei Tutu II was honoured with his goal celebration last weekend in La Liga.
After scoring against Granada in Atletico Madrid’s opening match in the Spanish La Liga, the Dutch attacker performed the Kete dance, which is typically associated with the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana.
Massive reactions to the celebration’s video, notably from Ghanaians, have spread over the internet.
According to Depay, the dance originated from the Ashanti Kingdom in Ghana and it honours our ruler.
He also has a dance in which ‘he takes, as I give’ is repeated, and when he takes, the kingdom is his. I had the honour of getting to meet the king, and that was a celebration for him. It’s always fun to celebrate with the squad and the supporters.
The 29-year-old, a member of the Netherlands national team, was born to a Ghanaian father and frequently travels to Ghana. He recently paid a visit to the king at his palace in Manhyia as part of a string of excursions to Ghana.
