Mahama Commends Akufo-Addo as a “Worthy Opponent”

President John Dramani Mahama has referred to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a “worthy opponent,” acknowledging their long-standing political rivalry.

In his inaugural speech at Black Star Square on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, President Mahama reflected on the beginning of his political journey alongside former President Akufo-Addo, recalling how both were elected to represent their respective constituencies in Parliament in 1997. Over the years, they ascended the political ladder to their current positions.

Despite their political differences, Mahama spoke fondly of their relationship, noting that Akufo-Addo had always greeted him with a “warm, firm handshake and a smile,” often calling him “Johnnie.” He described this personal gesture as a unique sign of their enduring friendship.

“Despite belonging to opposing political parties, we have always shared a profound mutual respect,” Mahama stated. “In those early days, we never could have imagined that destiny would elevate us to lead our respective parties and that we would compete three times for the highest office in the land.”

He continued, “Nana, as this will be our last meeting in these circumstances, and as I look back on the journey we’ve had together—two much younger men entering Parliament side by side, with a full head of black hair on my part and you with your signature bald head and round glasses—I can confidently say that you have been, without exception, a worthy opponent.”
