The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has formally classified former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive and a suspect in four significant corruption probes.
The investigations center on major financial transactions and procurement deals, raising concerns over accountability in public service. The key cases under scrutiny are as follows:
National Cathedral Procurement Scandal
Ken Ofori-Atta is being investigated for procurement irregularities linked to the contentious National Cathedral project, which has faced public criticism over transparency in funding. The investigation focuses on potential financial mismanagement and breaches in procurement processes.
Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) Contract
The OSP is probing a contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), a deal allegedly worth billions. Signed during Ofori-Atta’s time in office, it has raised concerns about its legitimacy and the financial implications for the state.
ECG and Beijing Jao Loss Reduction Contract
Another investigation involves a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Jao to reduce system losses. The OSP is examining whether proper procedures were followed and if the contract led to financial losses for the country.
Health Ministry’s Contracts with Service Ghana Auto Limited (Ambulances Deal)
The Special Prosecutor is also investigating contracts awarded by the Ministry of Health to Service Ghana Auto Limited for the procurement of ambulances. The focus is on whether procurement rules were violated and if funds were mismanaged.
According to the OSP, despite multiple requests for questioning, Mr. Ofori-Atta has refused to cooperate.
He stated that the former finance minister’s legal team asserts he is currently out of the country indefinitely due to medical reasons.
However, the Special Prosecutor maintains that he is a fugitive and has pledged to take all necessary actions to ensure he is brought to justice.
Further updates will be provided as the investigations progress.
