President-elect John Dramani Mahama has instructed the parliamentary leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to nominate Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker for Ghana’s 9th Parliament. The directive aims to position Bagbin as the head of Parliament in the upcoming session of the Fourth Republic.

The directive, as stated in a press release signed by Mahama’s Special Aide, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, followed consultations with the NDC’s National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership.

The President-elect emphasized the remarkable and distinguished career of Alban Bagbin in public service, noting his extensive contributions over the years. He highlighted Bagbin’s long tenure as the Member of Parliament for Nadowli, where he represented his constituents with dedication and commitment.

Additionally, Mahama acknowledged Bagbin’s leadership roles in Parliament, including serving as both the Minority Leader and Majority Leader, which demonstrated his ability to navigate complex political landscapes. Most notably, Mahama pointed out Bagbin’s role as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament, where his leadership was pivotal in shaping the legislative agenda and maintaining order in the house.

Mahama expressed strong belief that Bagbin’s wealth of experience would play a crucial role in effectively guiding the operations of Parliament. He emphasized that, with Bagbin at the helm, Ghana’s Parliament would be further fortified, enabling it to carry out its oversight duties with greater efficiency and impact.

Bagbin is recognized as one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in Ghana’s history, having dedicated several decades to public service.
