Bugre Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has acknowledged that he taped a purported plot to depose the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
On Monday, August 28, he spoke before the Parliamentary Committee formed to investigate the tape.
“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know what they are saying, and it is either I don’t go and tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it, or if I go and tell the President, it is good to tell him the right thing, and since I couldn’t keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record, and I know the President that if I go and tell him something, and it turns not to be true, next time he won,t give ne respect” he opined.
Following a complaint from the Minority, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, established the special committee.
The Speaker charged the committee with investigating the validity of the leaked audio tape, the conspiracy to depose the incumbent IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and any other issue mentioned in the audio recording, as well as recommending punishment to those found culpable where warranted.
It is also responsible for making reform proposals and issuing any other recommendations and subsequent directives that the committee deems relevant.
The audio recording catches the voices of some top officials reported to be discussing the IGP with the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
They can be heard criticising the IGP’s impartiality, alleging he has the support of former President John Dramani Mahama, and plotting to bring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) back to power.
As a result, the individuals demanded his removal before the 2024 general elections.
Mr Bugri Naabu is alleged to be the party official whose voice can be heard on the tape. However, he has denied recording the exchange.
