Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign took an unexpected turn as they had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Mozambique, running the prospect of losing the tournament early.
Ghana, despite the disappointment, is still hanging onto a slim hope of moving on to the next round.
Ghana is now in third place in Group B with two points from three games played: a 2-2 draw with Egypt, a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, and the most recent draw with Mozambique. To advance out of the six groups, Ghana must finish among the top four third-placed teams.
Even though they are presently ranked fifth, the Black Stars have little time to get better off the field. Similar to Zambia and Algeria, who have not yet played their third group game, the team has two points. Additionally, Ghana is ahead of Cameroon, who has only earned one point from their first two games.
How Can Ghana Qualify?
Zambia must lose by a two-goal margin and Cameroon must draw their game.
NB: Given Ghana’s goal differential—five goals against six conceded—a one-goal deficit against Zambia must be 1-0, 2-1, or 3-2 in order for Ghana’s five goals to surpass Zambia’s in the standings.
Ghana has some chance because of the permutations, but their future depends on how the other groups’ championship games turn out. Ghana watches the football drama play out, waiting for the proper set of circumstances to advance them into the much sought-after Round of 16.
