Ghanaian Artists With the Highest International Awards.

The art of music has the incredible power to transcend borders, connect cultures, and evoke emotions that resonate well with people universally. In the dynamic world of the music industry, recognition and accolades serve as a great testament to the artists’ skill, creativity, and impact on a global scale. International music awards since time immemorial have played a crucial role in celebrating the diversity of musical talent, fostering cross-cultural appreciation, and shaping the trajectory of the industry.

Ghana has produced a plethora of talented young and old artists who have made magnificent contributions to Ghana and the global art community. Ghanaian artists stand out with their unique perspectives, blending tradition with contemporary expressions.

Ghanaian artists mostly draw inspiration from their surroundings, incorporating the vibrant colors, dynamic rhythms, and diverse traditions that characterize the image of the country. With no exception, they use their art as a medium to explore themes such as cultural identity, social issues, and the interconnectedness of the global community.

The global art scene has increasingly seen and recognized the contributions of most  Ghanaian artists, with their works being featured in prestigious exhibitions and galleries around the globe. This recognition does not only elevate the individual artists but also sheds light on the rich artistic landscape of Ghana and sometimes Africa.

Let’s take a journey into the vibrant realm of Ghanaian artists with the highest international recognition.

To begin with,

Black Sheriff.

2023 BET Hip Hop Awards: Black Sherif Pips Aka, JHus, Sampa, Gazo To Win  Best International Flow - YEN.COM.GH

Mohammed Ismail Sherif, also known as Black Sherif, is a Ghanaian singer and rapper. He was born on January 9, 2002. He rose to prominence in 2021 with his song “First Sermon,” which he published that May. In July, the “Second Sermon” was delivered.

His biggest breakthrough came in March 2022 with his hit tune “Kwaku the Traveller,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Ghanaian and Nigerian Apple Music charts. (The music video has received 17 million views.) On October 5, 2022, he released his debut album, The Villain I Never Was. Ever since, Black Sheriff has won many awards and accolades on both the local and international scenes including VGMA Artist of the Year and BET Best International Flow in the recent BET awards(2023). Black Sheriff despite having about 18 Awards to his credit, qualifies as one of the Ghanaian artists projecting the Image of Ghana having won the BET joining  Fuse ODG, Samini, Stonebwoy, and Sarkodie.

Livingstone Etse Satekla Stonebwoy:

Livingstone Etse Satekla (born 5 March 1988) is a Ghanaian Afropop, dancehall, and reggae artist better known by his stage name Stonebwoy.

He is the President and CEO of Burniton Music Group. At the 2015 BET Awards, he was named Best International Act: Africa, and at the Ghana Music Awards, he was named Artist of the Year. He has also received two Billboard plaques. Stonebwoy was awarded the Boomplay Golden Club trophy after achieving 100 million streams on the site. He has been dubbed the African reggae and dance hall king. Stonebwoy has also appeared in the films Happy Death Day and My Name Is Ramadan. He is a global sanitation ambassador.

He was named Voltic Natural Mineral Water’s brand ambassador in September 2019. He is the Tecno mobile brand spokesperson in Ghana. He signed with Universal Music Group’s Def Jam Recordings and its flagship label, Def Jam Recordings Africa, in 2022. He’s planning three albums for the label.

Stonebwoy is an internationally acclaimed reggae and dancehall artist. At the 2015 BET Awards, he won the Best International Act: Africa category, giving recognition to his talent outside of Ghana.

Shatta Wale (Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr.)

Nobody can doubt that Shatta Wale is one of the best Ghanaian musicians. He has produced many hit songs and albums and has represented Ghana very well on the international stage. Furthermore, Shattawale is an inspiration to up-and-coming Ghanaian musicians, a fact that has allowed him to enjoy massive followers in the country. You cannot compare Shattawale because of his unique singing style.

Shatta Wale has been in the music industry for many years. Shatta started his music journey in 2004, he has been very active since 2009. Shatta has released more albums and songs than many of Ghana’s top artists.

How many international awards and accolades  has Shatta Wale won, One would ask? He has  at least 20 international music honours. He won the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for African Artiste of the Year and the International Reggae and World Music Awards for Best New Entertainer 2014. And also in 2018, he won the Ugandan Music Excellence Awards for Best African Music Video.

Sarkodie (Michael Owusu Addo)

Sarkodie wins the maiden BET Award for Best International Flow

Sarkodie  is a Ghanaian rapper, composer, and entrepreneur from Tema. He was born Michael Owusu Addo on July 10, 1988.He began rapping at an early age and has since established himself as a household figure in the Ghanaian and global music industries. His contributions to Ghanaian music have earned him various honors, including the Vodafone Ghana Music Award (VGMA) for “Artiste of the Decade.”At the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards, he was named the first winner of BET’s Best International Flow Artist. He is also regarded as one of the most influential proponents of the Azonto genre and dance, as well as one of the most successful African rappers of all time. Sarkodie is known for his ability to perform in a wide range of musical genres.

Sarkodie, the Ghanaian rapper and hiplife singer, has won 110 accolades from 206 nominations, including 28 Ghana Music accolades. Makye, his first studio album, earned him three honors at the 4syte TV Music Video honors and the Ghana Music Awards.

Ghanaian artists continue to make a greater impacts on the local and  global art stage, enriching the cultural tapestry with their unique perspectives and creative expressions. Many artists stand as cultural ambassadors, showcasing the beauty and depth of Ghana’s artistic heritage to the world.
