Former First Lady Theresa Kufuor passes away at age 87.

Theresa Kufuor, the 87-year-old wife of former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor, has died.

Asaase Radio reported that the former first lady passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023.

From 2001 to 2009, Theresa Kufuor held the position of First Lady of Ghana when her husband was the head of state.

Her husband, former President John Agyekum Kufuor was at home, when his wife of over 55 years died. Mrs Kufuor has not been well in recent years,” the report said.

Coincidentally, President Nana Akufo-Addo had gone to the mountains to meet the previous president, and it’s believed that she passed away just before the President got there.

J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor are among John and Theresa’s five children. They have eight grandchildren as well.

Before being married in 1962, the couple started dating after meeting at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961.

Theresa, whose last name was Mensah before she adopted her husband’s, worked as a nurse and a midwife before becoming the First Lady.

Additionally, she is credited for promoting amendments to the government’s white paper on educational reforms, which intended to put into place the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) plan.

Theresa attended school at the Catholic Convent, OLA, in Keta, in the Volta Region, before relocating to London, where she graduated from the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing, Edinburgh, Scotland, and became a registered general nurse.

At the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London, she continued her education, earning a State Certified Midwife Certificate in Premature Nursing.
