Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko revealed that efforts are being made to enrol Brian Mwenda, the fake lawyerwho prevailed in all 26 of his cases, in a foreign law school.
He recorded themselves together and posted the video to social media. He begged in the video on behalf of the young, smart individual, stating that he would turn himself in to any police station with the assistance of lawyers to aid in the investigation.
Mwenda has been reported to the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after it was found that he had been pretending to be an attorney while having no licence to practise law.
According to reports, he practised law for years, presenting cases to numerous judges at various levels of Kenyan courts, before being recently apprehended.
In the video, Mike Sonko urged the government to remember that Mwenda is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Mwenda thanked his followers for their support and told them that when the time is right and he has his day in court, he will prove his innocence. This was his first public statement following his arrest.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) said in a statement following his detention that Mwenda had managed to get unauthorised access to its system, locate an account with a name that matched his, change the details, and upload his photo in an effort to become a lawyer in Kenya.
The LSK claimed to have called an emergency meeting on Wednesday to launch an immediate investigation into Brian Mwenda’s means of evading LSK security and assuming the identity of a legitimate lawyer.
Only when a legitimate attorney with the same name, Brian Mwenda Njagi, complained to LSK’s secretariat on September 28 about not being able to access the membership portal did LSK become aware of the security breach.
