Energy Minister John Jinapor has rejected reports suggesting that the government plans to sell the state-owned Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
During a media briefing on February 21 at the West African Gas Pipeline Company Station in Tema, Energy Minister John Jinapor clarified that the government is not selling the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), but is instead exploring private sector partnerships to improve its efficiency and financial sustainability.
He firmly denied the claims, stating, “The news reports and commentary from some individuals who should know better suggesting we are selling ECG are untrue. It will not be sold. However, we are seeking private sector participation to enhance efficiency, reduce losses, and increase revenue, so we can address some of the outstanding bills.”
Mr. Jinapor emphasized that involving the private sector would help reduce losses and boost revenue, ultimately making it possible for citizens to afford their electricity bills.
He stated, “It will not be sold, but we seek private sector involvement to enhance efficiency, reduce losses, and strengthen the revenue base, ensuring that we can meet our financial obligations.”
