British High Commissioner joins Bawumia open new Tamale International Airport

British High Commissioner to Ghana joined Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia launched the new Tamale International Airport along with the Country Director from the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, Giselle Agyare, and the Northern Ghana Attaché from the UK, Paul Edwards.

Bawumia commissions Tamale International Airport Phase II project

This infrastructure project in Ghana, funded by the UK Government through UK Export Finance (UKEF), is anticipated to improve connectivity throughout the nation and the wider West African region. It will also support increased exports of local agricultural products like shea butter, cashew nuts, and mangoes, which is expected to boost economic growth in Northern Ghana.

After the event, Mrs. Thompson made the following statement: “Today, we celebrate not only the improvement of Ghana’s vital infrastructure, but also the potential of this world-class international airport to spur economic development throughout the north of Ghana. Tamale and this region of the nation as a whole are now connected to markets on every continent and in every country.

“We also acknowledge how strong the economic ties between the UK and Ghana are. The UK-Ghana Business Council spearheaded this initiative, which was financed by UK Export Finance and built by British firms in collaboration with Ghanaian firms.

Tamale International Airport to be commissioned this month

The initiative, which is being led by the UK company QGMI UK, has already given employment to more than 500 people, seen 2000 trees planted throughout the land, and seen the adoption of a Livelihood Restoration Plan by the local community Landowners and users should expect adequate compensation from Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), as well as assistance in reestablishing their primary land-based livelihoods.

Lord Offord, the UK’s Minister for Exports, stated: “Supporting Ghana’s economic revival requires strengthening local infrastructure.

It’s wonderful to see Tamale Airport’s transformation, supported by UK Export Finance and UK construction firms, come to a successful conclusion. This will expand travel alternatives throughout the nation, support local economies, and open up new investment opportunities.

The new development will boost travel to and from the north of Ghana with a focus on the Hajj, which will be advantageous to Hajj pilgrims since the new multipurpose building will act as a terminal during the Hajj Season.

The UK-Ghana Business Council, which was founded in 2018 and has supported more than £223 million in infrastructure investment across the nation and opened doors for both UK and Ghanaian enterprises, was the driving force behind the project’s inception.

As a further boost to trade and investment, London will play home to the 2024 UK-African Investment Summit, which will bring together political and commercial leaders, as well as members of international and regional organisations from the UK and African countries, including Ghana.
