Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Asante Mampong Member of Parliament (MP), could be the fifth name on the ballot for the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Primary on November 4.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) will make a judgement on this situation on Monday, after Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko’s earlier resignation announcement to the party.
The two flagbearer candidates received nine votes each at Saturday’s Super Delegates Conference, placing them tied sixth.
After the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) declared the official results, the Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee, Rev Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, who is also a former Speaker of Parliament, announced a run-off between the two.
He scheduled the run-off for Saturday, September 2, although stressing that one of the two may shift the dynamics.
“So, a week from today, if no one has stepped aside for the other, then we look forward to another election for a fifth person,” Rev Prof Oquaye told journalists at the NPP headquarters in Accra.
“At the end of the day, we are going to present five contestants for the grand finale.”
Darlington Bill Boampong-Bediako, a member of the Boakye Agyarko Campaign Team, revealed the former Energy Minister’s resignation on radio on Monday.
He stated that Mr Agyarko is confident of winning if he contests the run-off, but the decision is final.
