Bawumia: ‘It Felt Like Ghanaians Had a Nationwide Meeting and Decided Not to Vote’ on NPP’s Defeat”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, has attributed the party’s defeat to voter apathy.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia attributed the New Patriotic Party’s loss in the 2024 elections to the failure of approximately 2 million of its supporters to vote on Saturday, December 7, 2024, leading to the party’s most crushing defeat in the Fourth Republic.

In a meeting held at his residence in Accra on Monday, December 23, 2024, with the Chairpersons, Vice Chairpersons, and members of various committees, Dr. Bawumia expressed his astonishment at how such a significant number of party supporters failed to participate in the election.

Despite the party’s efforts to present a solid policy agenda to the electorate, he acknowledged that voter apathy played a major role in the party’s poor performance, wondering if those supporters had all made a collective decision to stay home on election day.

Dr. Bawumia remarked, “It seemed as though our people across the country had a meeting and collectively decided not to go out to vote.”

In the meantime, the Vice President expressed his appreciation to the members of the manifesto sub-committees, commending them for developing a comprehensive policy document that was shared with Ghanaians during the election.

Despite the election results, Dr. Bawumia expressed to the committee members his pride in their work and the transformative policies included in the manifesto, which was presented to the people of Ghana for their consideration.

The Vice President emphasized the need for a detailed analysis to understand why so many party supporters failed to vote, assuring that the party would carry out a thorough investigation as part of its reorganization plans moving forward.

Dr. Bawumia also extended his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone for their dedication and hard work in preparing the comprehensive document that was shared with the people of Ghana.

Regarding the 2024 NPP Manifesto, Dr. Bawumia urged members of the various manifesto committees not to consider their efforts as wasted.

“God willing, we will all benefit from this document in the future,” he assured.
