According to a survey, only 12% of specialists consulted by Ghanaian media are women.

According to a poll conducted by the Ghana Women Expert Project, fewer women experts are being interviewed by Ghanaian media.

The survey, which was carried out by independent journalists Nana Ama Agyemang Asante and Betty Kamkam-Boadu with assistance from and funding provided by the Journalism Department at City University of London, focused on the proportion of female specialists who were interviewed on four of the leading radio stations in the nation.

The radio stations that were under observation between February and May 2023 were Joy FM, Starr FM, Citi FM, and Peace FM.

Only 12% of the experts interviewed on the morning shows of the aforementioned radio stations were women, according to the survey.

With 88% of the experts surveyed being men, this indicates a 6.6% reduction from the prior report.

According to a statement from the Ghana Women Expert Project, “the survey, which tracked the number of women interviewed as experts on a wide range of topics, was conducted between February and May 2023.”

Only 12% of the experts interviewed by the media were women, it was discovered. There has been a 6.6% decrease in this when compared to the number of female experts interviewed on radio shows in the prior report.

The complete survey results are listed below:

– In the second round of the poll, the percentage of women consulted for their expertise in the Ghanaian media dropped by 6.6%.

– There were nine expert males for every one expert female.

– The overall representation of female experts across all shows was lower than that of male experts across all shows combined.

– Although Joy SMS interviewed more male and female experts, Morning Starr gave female experts the most airtime, 3 hours, 12 minutes, and 25 seconds in total.

– Only 12% of the experts interviewed by the media were women.

– Only 113 of the 936 experts contacted for the period’s interviews were women.

– Only 116 minutes and 4 seconds each week on all programmes were devoted to female experts.

– Interviews with female experts on gender-related issues were more common than interviews on other subjects.
