The current Bank of Ghana setup has been compared to a crime scene by the minority caucus in parliament.
Prior to its #OccupyBoG protest, the Minority spoke to attendees at a public discussion on Thursday at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). They criticised the Central Bank for its excessive lending to the government over the previous year.
Former President John Dramani Mahama did not need a loan from the top bank, according to Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, even though 2016 was a difficult fiscal year and doubled as an election year. However, the current managers at the Central Bank are so involved in financial crime that they have turned the Bank into a crime scene.
It is crucial to note that the NDC government funded the full budget in 2016 on the watch of President John Mahama and despite the fact that general elections were held that year. This was done without any assistance from the Bank of Ghana. The Bank of Ghana is currently the scene of a crime, and Mr. Strategist and the other economic managers encouraged and enabled this criminal activity.
The protest, which is set for September 5, 2023, is being planned by the Minority as a way to voice their displeasure with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his appointees, who they think have mishandled the top bank and should step down.
You’ve been reckless; resign within 21 days – NDC to BoG Governor, deputies
The police advised the Caucus to take alternate routes for the planned protest after the Minority gave notice that it will picket the Bank of Ghana’s headquarters on 5 September to formally present a petition to the governor demanding his and deputy’s resignation.
The Caucus rejected the offer, and a court order was eventually obtained to stop the demonstration, but the Caucus is resolute and has vowed to move forward with its preparations.
