Veep commends Energy Minister for ending ‘Dumsor’.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president, has expressed satisfaction with the steps made by John Jinapor, the minister of energy and green transition, and his team to prevent the collapse of the electricity industry.

The Vice President expressed her satisfaction that Ghanaians did not suffer power outages in the wake of the massive debts and the failing sector that the NDC administration took over in 2025 during a working visit to the Ministry in Accra on January 27.

“This is a compelling tale. Professor Opoku-Agyemang remarked, “I remember when the results were announced and we immediately went into all kinds of meetings, and I remember all the pressures, especially when we were learning the real situation that we had inherited and what needed to be done.”

The Veep noted that “we were threatened with huge debts and power cuts even before we took over power” and expressed pride in the success of all the initiatives.

According to John Jinapor, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, more power will be purchased this year to meet the anticipated supply shortfall in 2026, 2027, and 2028 and to keep up with growing electrical usage.

The Minister claims that the strengthening in the economy has led to an increase in electricity use.

“There is a significant growth in electricity usage due to the way the economy is improving, and we need to keep up with that pace. And we need to be really creative to accomplish this. Therefore, in order to provide Ghanaians with more affordable power, we are either developing competitive tendering or using VRA as a fund,” he stated.

Additionally, he stated that hydro power has dropped to 28% and that proactive steps are required to prevent a deficit of 290–420 MW by 2026 and beyond.

According to Mr. John Jinapor, his organization would build a second gas processing facility using local gas.

The Minister mentioned that crude oil production is starting to increase in the petroleum industry.

“Gas fields have been extended, and crude oil output is predicted to rise by 10,000 barrels per day. Gas prices will drop from $3.1 to $2.5 as a result of a $2 billion deal, increasing output and consumption, he said.

According to the Minister, 57,000 cylinders have been reconditioned at the Ghana Cylinder Factory, and the Tema Oil Refinery is in service.

A green transition is being supported by the development of solar installations and EV charging stations.
