UPSA Issues Apology Over Viral Incident, Reconsiders Dress Code Policy

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has publicly apologized after a viral video showed an altercation between a Level 100 female student and a member of its Dress Code Compliance Team.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has issued an official apology following a viral video that captured a confrontation between a Level 100 female student and a member of the university’s Dress Code Compliance Team. The incident, which sparked widespread reaction on social media, prompted immediate action from university authorities.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, UPSA confirmed that an internal investigation had been conducted, uncovering the facts surrounding the altercation. The university labeled the conduct of the staff member involved as “unacceptable” and condemned it without reservation.

“As a professional institution guided by the values of integrity, respect, and service, UPSA places the dignity and welfare of all students above all else. No staff member is permitted to mistreat a student under any circumstances,” the statement stressed.

To demonstrate its commitment, the Vice-Chancellor personally reached out to the affected student with an apology, reaffirming UPSA’s dedication to maintaining a respectful and professional campus environment. The staff member involved has also issued a written apology, admitting to misconduct during the incident.

In a show of mutual accountability, the student also submitted a letter to the university expressing remorse for her behavior during the exchange.

Policy Review and Institutional Response

As part of its broader response, UPSA announced a comprehensive review of its Dress Code enforcement procedures. The university emphasized that interactions between staff and students must reflect core institutional values such as professionalism, mutual respect, and discipline.

“To ensure better conduct in the future, members of the Dress Code Compliance Team will undergo additional training,” the statement read.

UPSA also reaffirmed the importance of its long-established dress code policy, which is designed to instill professional discipline and corporate ethics among students. The policy is clearly outlined in the Student Handbook, and students acknowledge and accept it upon enrollment.

The university noted that generations of UPSA graduates, many of whom have gone on to hold leadership roles in various sectors, credit the professional culture cultivated on campus as a key influence in shaping their careers.
