Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has disclosed that he has gathered from reliable sources that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged former President Akufo-Addo to issue an apology to the people of Ghana.
He has claimed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has privately urged ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. According to Kennedy, this advice stems from the significant hardships experienced by citizens during Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Speaking to the media on June 28, Kennedy said, “I’ve heard through the grapevine that President Kufuor has advised Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. I support this call completely. He must apologise.” He made these remarks while participating in a panel discussion on the NPP’s internal elections.
The former NPP presidential aspirant justified his support for the apology, citing issues such as impunity, corruption, abuse of power, and widespread economic difficulties under Akufo-Addo’s leadership. He added that these factors led voters to reject the party at the polls.
Kennedy’s comments follow former President Kufuor’s thought-provoking remarks during the launch of the Patriotic Institute, where he questioned the party’s decline since 2016. “Why have our fortunes continued to dwindle since 2016 and 2020, leading to our current state?” Kufuor asked.
In response, Kennedy attributed the decline to the suffering endured by Ghanaians and what he described as the Akufo-Addo administration’s indifferent approach to governance.
Also contributing to the discussion, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Mr. Kwaku Ansah-Asare, criticized the current state of the NPP, claiming the party has lost its core identity and leadership. “The NPP has no clear leader. Everyone is acting independently. We need figures like the late B.J. Da Rocha or Peter Ala Adjetey to restore order and direction,” he said.
Controversy is also brewing over the party’s decision to hold its flagbearer elections on January 31, 2026, a move some say contravenes the party’s constitution, which mandates electing national, regional, and constituency officers first.
At the same event, Kufuor emphasized the importance of selecting a presidential candidate who appeals broadly to Ghanaians and can address pressing national challenges. “If we want power, we must present someone who connects with the general electorate and can offer real solutions,” he said.
He also warned against identity-based campaigning, cautioning that rhetoric rooted in tribalism or religion only validates negative stereotypes promoted by political opponents. “If such talk comes from within our own party, we’re only helping to reinforce these damaging labels,”
Kufuor warned.
