Gifty Klenam, a former two-term Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally joined the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The former MP made her announcement on Thursday morning (January 30, 2025) after receiving her NDC membership card in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region.
In her remarks to the press, Klenam highlighted that the NDC shares her values and encouraged other disillusioned NPP members to boldly follow her lead.
“After discussing with my family, I chose to join the NDC because it aligns with my values and vision for Ghana,” she said.
She also expressed strong support for the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, believing it offers the best plan for the country’s development. Klenam is confident that under John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, the country will experience significant transformation and prosperity.
Although Klenam’s specific role within the NDC is yet to be determined, she has expressed her readiness to serve in any capacity. She emphasized that her immediate priority is to engage with the NDC grassroots, empower them, and create opportunities for them within Ghana, rather than encouraging them to look for opportunities abroad.
Her defection has sparked significant discussions in Ghana’s political scene, given her prominence as a former figure within the NPP.
Klenam served in both the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic and later became the CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC) in 2017 during the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.
