The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the withdrawal of the three military-led African states: Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger from the Community.
The exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS takes effect today, January 29, 2025.
In a statement, ECOWAS urged member states to continue allowing citizens of these countries the right to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment in line with ECOWAS protocols until further notice. This decision reflects the spirit of regional solidarity and aims to serve the interests of the people, while keeping ECOWAS’ doors open, as per the ECOWAS Authority’s directive.
Despite the exit, ECOWAS emphasized that member states should still recognize the national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.
Additionally, ECOWAS has called on member states to continue treating goods and services from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy. The regional bloc also urged member states to provide full support and cooperation to ECOWAS officials from the three countries during their assignments for the Community.
ECOWAS stated that these arrangements will remain in place until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the modalities for future engagement with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The Commission has established a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries.
ECOWAS emphasized that this message is important to prevent confusion and disruption in the lives and businesses of the people during the transition period.
