The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has urged President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize appointing a qualified Minister of Agriculture as he prepares to form his new government.
In a message congratulating the President, PFAG highlighted the importance of appointing a Minister with a strong agricultural background and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders across the value chain. The Association underscored the need for a minister with practical experience to address the sector’s persistent challenges.
The statement, signed by National President Wepia Awal Adugwala, read: “We respectfully request that you appoint a Minister for the agricultural sector who possesses a strong agricultural background, relevant experience, is approachable, youthful, and capable of effectively engaging with stakeholders across the value chain.”
PFAG highlighted that the nomination is vital for ensuring meaningful interaction with smallholder farmers and tackling the challenges hindering agricultural progress.
The Association also called for an audit of the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam.
They stated that the dam could help address climate change and boost agricultural GDP by 20-30% if properly developed. However, it has been misused for extortion by the previous government without proper oversight. They urged that the audit be part of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative to recover any illegal funds. They also requested that a budget be allocated to start the dam’s construction within the first 120 days of the new administration.
The Association also urged the President to ban all mining in forests, farmlands, and rivers. They emphasized the need for a land reclamation plan for damaged farmlands as a top priority. They expressed hope that, under the President’s leadership, smallholder farmers and the agricultural sector will reach their full potential. They also look forward to a leadership style that is effective, honest, inclusive, and efficient.
