Ghana is at risk of a power crisis due to the scheduled shutdown of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) for maintenance from January 20 to February 16, 2025.

A report by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) highlights that Ghana needs to secure approximately $90 million to buy alternative fuel for power generation during the shutdown of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The WAGP, a key source of natural gas for the country’s energy sector, will be undergoing maintenance, including pigging and valve replacements, causing a complete halt in gas supply.

The shutdown is expected to significantly affect power generation, particularly in the Tema region, where numerous power plants rely on gas from the pipeline.

To mitigate the impact, GRIDCo’s report suggests several strategies, including:

Rescheduling planned generator shutdowns that overlap with the maintenance period.

Securing alternative fuel sources, such as light crude oil, to keep thermal plants running.

Implementing load shedding as a last resort to maintain grid stability.

It stresses the urgent need to secure funds for alternative fuel procurement, warning that failure to do so could result in widespread power outages and disrupt economic activities.

Meanwhile,t he government is actively working to secure the necessary funds and implement measures to prevent a major power crisis.
