Nana Akomea, the Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 elections to voter apathy.

Based on the presidential results announced by the Electoral Commission, he noted that approximately 2 million NPP supporters who voted in 2020 did not cast their ballots in 2024.

Akomea pointed out that the votes received by President-elect John Dramani Mahama in 2024 were identical to the number he secured in 2020, highlighting a stagnant result of 6.3 million votes. In contrast, the NPP’s vote count dropped from 6.7 million in 2020 to 4.6 million in 2024. He emphasized that the NPP’s defeat was a direct result of its supporters’ failure to vote.

The certified presidential results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) highlight significant voter apathy within the NPP, with a notable decline in voter turnout among their supporters compared to the 2020 elections.

Over two million (2,073,283) voters who supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 elections chose not to participate in the 2024 polls, which played a crucial role in their electoral defeat. In the 2020 elections, President Nana Akufo-Addo secured 6.7 million (6,730,587) votes, representing 51.30% of the total votes cast, which contributed to his victory.

However, in the 2024 presidential race, the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, faced a dramatic decline in voter support. He garnered just over 4.6 million (4,657,304) votes, which accounted for only 41.61% of the total ballots cast. This marked a significant drop in the NPP’s performance, reflecting a severe erosion of support, likely fueled by voter apathy among the party’s base.

The drop in turnout among NPP supporters, coupled with the party’s failure to engage or motivate its electorate effectively, resulted in the NPP’s inability to secure a second term in office.
