The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) will meet with the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, to advocate for improved electoral inclusion for Persons with Disabilities in the 2024 general elections.

The high-level meeting, set to take place at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters, will focus on evaluating the Commission’s provisions for Persons with Disabilities. The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) plans to present key recommendations to ensure that the electoral processes for the upcoming 2024 general elections are accessible and inclusive.

The GFD delegation will be joined by representatives from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), civil society partners, and allied organizations. The team is meeting with the Electoral Commission (EC) to assess the current measures in place and highlight gaps that hinder the full participation of Persons with Disabilities in electoral activities.

This crucial engagement is part of the GFD’s broader advocacy efforts to ensure the electoral rights of all Ghanaians, regardless of ability, are upheld.

The GFD has previously presented important recommendations to the Electoral Commission (EC) to enhance electoral inclusivity, such as providing tactile ballot guides for visually impaired voters and ensuring designated polling stations with ramps.

This upcoming meeting offers a chance for a follow-up evaluation and the sharing of the GFD’s monitoring reports, aimed at strengthening preparations for the 2024 elections.

The GFD also plans to make significant announcements regarding the participation of persons with disabilities in the December elections. The organization is optimistic about ensuring greater inclusive opportunities for eligible voters with disabilities in Ghana, allowing them to exercise their voting rights with ease and dignity on December 7, 2024.
