Sam George: Mahama Will Uphold Ghanaian Values in Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Sam George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo of deliberately delaying the passage of the Family Values Bill.

In an interview with Beatrice Adu on November 20, he expressed his belief that the actions being taken were part of a deliberate and well-thought-out strategy aimed at obstructing the passage of the bill and ensuring it does not become law. He suggested that these efforts were not coincidental but rather a calculated attempt to undermine the legislative process and stall progress on the bill.

Sam George voiced his frustration over what he perceived as a lack of dedication from both President Nana Akufo-Addo and the judiciary to uphold Ghanaian cultural values. He accused the President of displaying a pro-LGBTQ stance, contradicting his public statements.

“When Kamala Harris came to Ghana and confronted him about the bill, he disowned it, claiming he knew nothing about it. His actions speak louder than words,” Sam George stated.

The Ningo-Prampram MP also criticized Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, accusing her of deliberately obstructing justice and working to protect the President from being compelled to take action on the Family Values BilL.

“The Chief Justice, who claims to be a Christian, is finding ways to prevent the bill from reaching the President,” Sam George alleged.

The Family Values Bill, which aims to criminalize LGBTQ activities in Ghana, has already been passed by Parliament and forwarded to the Presidency. However, the MP accused the executive of deliberately stalling its progress, despite mounting public pressure for its enactment.

Sam George rejected concerns that the Family Values Bill would need to be reintroduced if the current Parliament ends without receiving presidential assent. He expressed assurance about the bill’s future, saying, “The bill has been properly passed by Parliament and will move forward to the next President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who will uphold Ghanaian values.”

The Supreme Court is set to announce its decision on the bill on December 18, 2024. However, Sam George expressed doubts about the process, suggesting that the delays are politically motivated to push the matter beyond President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

“There will be a change in government on January 7, and those hindering justice today will eventually be held accountable,” he warned.

The debate surrounding the Family Values Bill continues to be a major topic of national discussion, with strong opposing views from both supporters and critics regarding its potential consequences for Ghana.
