GFP’s Roman Fada Barred from Running in Presidential Elections

Phillip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada of the Ghana Freedom Party, has been disqualified from running in the presidential elections.

Before the passing of Akua Donkor, Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, served as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party.

Madam Akua Donkor, the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, passed away on Monday, October 28, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

The Ghana Freedom Party issued a letter announcing that they would no longer participate in the upcoming 2024 elections. This decision came after the passing of their leader, Madam Akua Donkor. However,   the Ghana Freedom Party announced Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, as its new presidential candidate for the 2024 elections in a letter dated November 4, following the death of Madam Akua Donkor. Prior to Madam Donkor’s passing, Roman Fada had served as the party’s Vice-Presidential candidate.

The Electoral Commission stated that upon reviewing Philip Appiah Kubi’s nomination forms, it identified several errors and discrepancies that needed to be addressed.

The Electoral Commission (EC) further pointed out that there were multiple illegalities and inconsistencies  found in the nomination forms submitted by Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, which raised significant concerns regarding the legitimacy of his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections. These irregularities were serious enough to question whether his nomination could be valid. Despite these issues, the EC made it clear that it would not alter the order of candidates on the ballot papers, which had already been finalized. In a press briefing on Tuesday, November 12, Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, confirmed that votes cast for the late Madam Akua Donkor, who had been the original presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party, would be annulled. She emphasized that such votes would not be counted in the final tally during the elections, given the unfortunate passing of Madam Donkor.
