John Mahama Promises to Build a National Theatre in Kumasi Under the Next NDC Government”

John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed the party’s dedication to revitalizing Ghana’s creative industry.

In a meeting with creatives in Kumasi on Tuesday, November, Mahama stated that if the NDC wins the upcoming elections, the party will construct a new national theatre in Kumasi to support content creators in the region.

John Mahama, the former President of Ghana and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reiterated the party’s firm commitment to the promises made in its 2020 manifesto, particularly regarding the development of the creative industry.

He made it clear that, despite the passage of time, the NDC has not wavered in its intention to build a new national theatre in Kumasi to support content creators in the region. He assured that this promise would be fulfilled by the next NDC government if they are elected to power.

In addition to the Kumasi theatre, Mahama also addressed concerns about the current state of the National Theatre in Accra. He expressed disappointment over its poor condition and the lack of proper facilities for artists. As part of the NDC’s broader vision for the creative sector,

Mahama outlined plans to modernize the National Theatre with state-of-the-art equipment. His vision is to transform the venue into a fully equipped creative hub that will serve as a national center for artists from all over the country, providing a platform for innovation, collaboration, and the promotion of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

John Mahama highlighted that the National Film Theatre, built with Chinese assistance during Rawlings’ presidency, has not been rehabilitated since its construction, leaving it in a state of disrepair and underscoring the need for modernizing cultural infrastructure in Ghana.

John Mahama expressed concern over the poor condition of the National Theatre, stating that many aspects of the building are in disrepair, such as the inability to draw the curtains and the deteriorating stage. He emphasized the need for rehabilitation to ensure the theatre can better support the creative industry.

He also reiterated the NDC’s commitment, reminding the public that in their 2020 manifesto, the party promised to build Ghana’s second national theatre in Kumasi. Mahama assured that the NDC has not backed down from this promise and, if elected, will fulfill it by constructing the new theatre in Kumasi.
