Iaki Williams Arthur (born 15 June 1994) is a Ghanaian footballer who plays as a forward for Athletic Bilbao in La Liga and the Ghana national team.

He made nearly 375 first-team appearances for Athletic Bilbao, including a La Liga record of 251 straight games. He was developed at Athletic Bilbao’s academy. He scored the game-winning goal in the Supercopa de Espana 2020-21.

 

Williams, who was born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, made his official debut for the Spain national team in 2016. He chose to represent Ghana at the international level in 2022, being picked for the 2022 World Cup.

Williams scored a hat-trick for Bilbao Athletic in a 4-0 win against Amorebieta at the opening of the 2014-15 season and followed that up on 7 September 2014 with another treble in a 5-1 win over Leioa. Despite only appearing in the first half of the season, his 13 goals in 18 games helped the squad reach the Segunda División.

Inaki Williams’ professional career began in the youth ranks of local team Pamplona. Williams made his first-team (and La Liga) debut on December 6, 2014, after benefiting from Aritz Aduriz’s injury. He started in a 1-0 home loss to Córdoba. On February 19, the following year, he scored his first goal for the club, starting and helping to a 2-2 draw at Torino in the UEFA Europa League round becoming the club’s first black player to score.

Breakthrough with Athletic Bilbao, Williams scored twice (before giving up a penalty) in a 3-1 win over Betis on November 1, 2015. He replicated the feat against Partizan in the Europa League group stage the following week (5-1). He scored “a phenomenal volley” to help overcome Espanyol 2-1 at the San Mamés in his third match in a row.

I don’t think it’s ethical to steal the place of someone who truly deserves to go and feels completely at home in Ghana. The local press took this as a rejection of any Black Stars contact.

Finally, on July 5, 2022, Williams declared that he would be available for the African nation in time for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. He received his first call-up in September for a friendly against Brazil and Nicaragua. He made his debut against the former, appearing in the second half of Le Havre’s 3-0 defeat. He was chosen for Ghana’s squad for the finals in Qatar; within the team, he adopted the moniker “Kweku” in honor of the day he was born (Wednesday), as is customary in Ghana.

Ghana defeated Madagascar 1-0 in a fiercely contested encounter at the FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Friday evening, thanks to a late goal from Inaki Williams.
