The West African bloc Ecowas’ “decisive action” in dealing with junta leaders in Niger a week after the coup has been praised by the UK’s foreign minister.
James Cleverly, who is touring three African nations, was speaking after meeting Bola Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Mr. Tinubu, who is also the chairman of Ecowas, has taken a strong stand against the coup that has been roundly criticised.
He hosted a summit of West African leaders on Sunday, at which they offered the junta in Niger one week to abdicate or risk military action.
The Britain’s foreign secretary said: “We touched briefly on the situation in Niger. I made the point that the UK very much welcomes Ecowas’ and indeed his [Tinubu’s] decisive action, his strong commitment to democracy and the unambiguous message that violence is not the means to bring political change in any circumstance.
