The leadership of former Menzgold Company Limited clients has gotten in touch with former president John Dramani Mahama to ask for his assistance in getting their money back from the illegal gold dealer and investment firm.
Since the company was shut down in 2018, the customers have suffered, with 217 people passing away and some experiencing blindness and mental illness.
Clients are now pleading with the former President to lead them in asking the government for a bailout to help them out of their predicament.
The group’s head and spokesperson, Mr. Fred Forson, made an emotional appeal to Mr. Mahama at a meeting with the former President on Friday in his Cantonments office, stressing that their condition was bad and that they urgently required a state bailout.
“We believe that when Your Excellency adds your voice, it will help. Where we are now, we need a bailout from the state, so we humbly call on you to lead us in calling on the state to give us a bailout plan. Because life is very, very unbearable for us”,
“The state has wasted over four years on this small matter. There was no action. I am sure everybody will attest that it was the resilience of the customers we kept on pressing, pressing and now the Attorney-General has moved the matter from the lower court to the High Court. However, the civil aspect, which is the retrieval of our money, is still pending.”
In expressing his condolences to the victims, President Mahama referred to the occurrence as one of the most regrettable ones in the nation’s history. He thought that since the government’s regulatory oversights are lax and such fraudulent schemes frequently succeed, it bears responsibility for the victims who are citizens.
He also questioned why the government has not yet seized the company’s assets, sold them at auction, and utilised the money to reimburse some of the investments made by customers.
In response to the customers of Menzgold’s dilemma, President Mahama promised to stand with them in drawing attention to their issue and asked the government to give them all the information they require regarding its attempts to improve it.
The clients are hoping that with the former president’s backing, they would be able to get their money back and make up for the damages they have incurred.
