President John Dramani Mahama has named Wisdom Kwaku Deku as the interim Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA).
The announcement, made on January 17, 2025, marks Wisdom Kwaku Deku’s return to the National Identification Authority (NIA) after his dismissal in 2017 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
The appointment letter, signed by Callistus Mahama, the President’s Secretary, stated that Deku’s role would begin immediately, pending the necessary constitutional advice from the NIA Council and in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Deku expressed his deep gratitude to President Mahama for the opportunity, saying, “I am extremely grateful to President John Dramani Mahama for this recognition to serve as the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA). It can ONLY be God. Resetting NIA to Build the Ghana We All Want Together.”
Deku’s reinstatement is significant, especially in light of the termination letter from 2017, which was signed by Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, the Acting Executive Secretary of the NIA at the time.
The letter stated that Deku’s employment had been terminated immediately under the previous government.
With over 15 years of expertise in IT strategy, cybersecurity, and systems analysis, Deku has played a key role in the implementation of the National Identity System (NIS), ensuring its integrity and reliability. He holds an MSc in Cybersecurity from the University of Liverpool, along with certifications in ethical hacking, IT management, and database administration, among others.
Deku’s leadership is expected to introduce innovation and efficiency to the NIA as it works to enhance Ghana’s national identification infrastructure under his direction.
